Germany Receives First All-Electric Catamaran Ferry from Damen Shipyards

Dutch Damen Shipyards Group has successfully delivered Germany’s first all-electric catamaran ferry to AG Reederei Norden-Frisia, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry.

The state-of-the-art vessel was handed over on January 15, 2025, and after a seamless transfer from Rotterdam to Norddeich on January 22, it is now ready to serve passengers between Norddeich and Norderney on the East Frisian Wadden Sea.

Environmentally Friendly Operations

Designed to accommodate up to 150 passengers, the 32-meter catamaran operates solely on electric power, ensuring zero emissions during its journeys. Powered by two 600kW electric motors, the ferry can reach speeds of up to 12 knots while maintaining a draught of just 1.2 meters to navigate shallow waterways efficiently.

The vessel’s construction at Damen shipyards in Poland and the Netherlands showcases the commitment to sustainability and innovation in the maritime sector. With a focus on reducing carbon footprint, AG Reederei Norden-Frisia plans to charge the ferry’s batteries using electricity generated from onshore solar panels.

Efficient Route and Operations

Upon completion of acceptance trials, the E-Kat ferry will operate on a 30-minute route, allowing ample time for passenger embarkation and disembarkation at both ends. During peak season, the ferry is scheduled to make eight daily trips between Norderney and Norddeich, offering a seamless and eco-friendly travel experience.
