Nova Innovation’s Floating Solar Demonstrator Braces Storm Éowyn

Scotland-based Nova Innovation’s floating solar demonstrator at the Port of Leith has proven its resilience after withstanding Storm Éowyn, described by the Met Office as “probably the strongest to hit the UK in the past 10 years.”

According to Nova Innovation, the extreme weather event left over a million people without power, with hurricane-force winds sweeping across Scotland, Ireland, and parts of the UK.

Despite the severe conditions, Nova Innovation’s floating solar system continued supplying electricity to Forth Ports HQ without sustaining damage.

Since its deployment in 2023, the demonstrator has endured over a dozen named storms. Storm Éowyn presented the most severe test to date, yet the system maintained 100% availability, Nova Innovation said.

“Nova’s floating solar technology exemplifies how innovation and sustainability can work together to create systems in challenging environments while supporting a cleaner, greener future,” said the company in a social media post.

In July 2024, Nova Innovation and RSK launched AuqaGen365, a joint venture (JV) set to design, build, and install floating solar power stations across the globe.

Expanding Horizons: Nova Innovation’s Collaborations and Initiatives

In terms of other news coming from Nova Innovation, the company together with 12 other ones, joined the UK Marine Energy Council (MEC) as a lead partner, intending to support the council’s work in realizing the UK’s marine energy potential.
