Norwegian Shipping Player Arriva Shipping Invests in Battery Hybrid Vessel

Norwegian shipping player Arriva Shipping has booked a new 8,000 dwt battery hybrid dry cargo vessel to be constructed by the China-based shipbuilder Jiangsu SOHO Marine Heavy Industry.

As disclosed, the vessel is slated for delivery in the third quarter of 2026.

It is set to join its sister vessel, the 8,300 dwt Nor Viking, as well as one more newbuilding currently under construction at the Jiangsu SOHO shipyard. The new vessel is projected to be welcomed by the end of 2025.

Investing in Sustainability

The new vessel will feature a 2 MW battery hybrid system designed to reduce harmful emissions and energy consumption, aligning with strict environmental regulations. Arriva Shipping CEO and Partner Sindre Matre highlighted that this investment is part of the company’s goal to modernize its fleet and reduce its carbon footprint.

Arriva Shipping currently owns and operates a fleet of eight self-discharging dry cargo vessels, with capacities ranging from 2,000 to 8,000 deadweight tons. The addition of these new vessels marks the ninth and tenth additions to the company’s eco-friendly fleet.

Decarbonization in the Maritime Industry

Battery hybrid ships have become a practical solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption while enhancing efficiency and sustainability. These vessels are increasingly being adopted across various segments of the maritime industry, including containerships, pure car and truck carriers, and ferries.

For example, Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1 AS recently placed an order for battery-powered autonomous ferries, which are expected to operate in Norway starting in 2026. The vessels will feature automation functions and autonomous systems for enhanced performance.

In addition, Fjord1 has partnered with Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) to deliver onshore charging stations for the ferries, further supporting their sustainability efforts.

Conclusion

Arriva Shipping’s investment in a new battery hybrid vessel reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability and decarbonization in the maritime industry. With the addition of these eco-friendly vessels to its fleet, Arriva Shipping is taking significant steps towards reducing its environmental impact and embracing innovative solutions for a greener future.
