Seaspan Energy Achieves Milestone with First Ship-to-Ship LNG Bunkering in Port of Vancouver

Seaspan Energy, a division of Seaspan Marine, has reached a significant milestone with the successful completion of the first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation in the Port of Vancouver, Canada.

The operation was conducted by Seaspan’s 7,600 cubic meter LNG bunkering vessel, Seaspan Lions, on January 30, 2025, marking a major step forward in the adoption of low-carbon fuel alternatives in the maritime industry.

“Completing our first successful bunkering in local waters is a major milestone for Seaspan Energy and signifies the introduction of a sustainable fuel option from the Port of Vancouver and beyond,” said Harly Penner, President of Seaspan Energy.

“With two LNG bunkering vessels now operational and our first bunkering completed, we are proud to offer an accredited LNG bunkering solution in Vancouver to ship owners worldwide.”

Seaspan received the first LNG bunkering accreditation from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority in November 2024, allowing the company to conduct ship-to-ship bunkering for LNG-fueled vessels calling at the Vancouver port.

This achievement follows Seaspan’s inaugural ship-to-ship LNG bunkering in December 2024 at the Port of Long Beach, marking the commencement of its services on the West Coast of North America. Seaspan operates a fleet of three 112-meter-long LNG bunkering vessels – Seaspan Garibaldi, Seaspan Lions, and Seaspan Baker.

These vessels, each with a capacity of 7,600 cubic meters, were constructed by CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering in China. They are equipped with a direct current power distribution system, three dual-fuel generators, and two 1,600 KW azimuth thrusters, enhancing environmental performance by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and operational pollution while improving economic efficiency.
