Korea’s Hanwha Group Leading the Way in Ammonia Gas Turbine Technology for Shipping

Korea’s Hanwha Group plans to complete the development of LNG carriers and containerships using an ammonia gas turbine propulsion system by 2028.

Ammonia-fueling is widely seen as key to shipping’s decarbonization. While ammonia fueled four-stroke engines are on the horizon, ammonia gas turbines could revolutionize the industry in the near future.

Hanwha Group’s ambitious plans involve developing ammonia gas turbines in collaboration with Baker Hughes. The joint agreement aims to leverage Baker Hughes’ turbine technology and a newly-developed ammonia combustion system by PSM, a subsidiary of Hanwha, to create a game-changing propulsion system for large vessels.

The ammonia gas turbines are designed to enable 100% ammonia combustion and dual fuel operation with a natural gas and ammonia blend, offering a completely carbon-free mode of propulsion. With approval in principle obtained from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for applying ammonia gas turbines to LNG carriers, Hanwha Group is making strides towards a sustainable future for maritime transportation.

PSM and Baker Hughes have made significant progress with high-pressure ammonia combustion tests and feasibility studies, with a target to conduct full engine tests with ammonia by the end of 2027. This milestone will pave the way for commercial availability of the turbine for orders.

Baker Hughes believes that fuel switching to ammonia is crucial for achieving emissions reductions in various industries, including transportation. The collaboration with Hanwha Group signifies a commitment to driving the adoption of low-carbon fuel propulsion in the global maritime sector.

James Shon, senior executive vice president at Hanwha Ocean, expressed excitement about the innovative solution to enhance the adoption of ammonia as a fuel for future vessels. Nuno Kim, executive vice president at Hanwha Power Systems, emphasized the company’s role in supporting ammonia combustion systems for decarbonizing the marine sector.

Baker Hughes is actively exploring the use of small-size gas turbines to accelerate the transition to ammonia and hydrogen-powered turbines. With the successful testing of the world’s first 100% hydrogen turbine, the company is poised to drive sustainable energy solutions in the shipping industry.
