Corvus ESS Powers the World’s First Fully Electric Offshore Vessel

Corvus Energy to Deliver Mega-Size Battery System for First Fully Electric Offshore Vessel

Corvus Energy, a leading provider of energy storage solutions for marine applications, has announced that it will deliver a mega-size battery system for the first fully electric offshore vessel ever to be built. The vessel in question is an electric Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (eCSOV) that will be constructed by Armon shipyard in Spain for UK-based shipowner Bibby Marine Ltd.

For this groundbreaking project, Corvus Energy will supply its Blue Whale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which will deliver close to 25MWh of power for the vessel. This deployment will mark the largest LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery system ever delivered to a maritime project, underscoring Corvus Energy’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of sustainable maritime technology.

Optimized Power Distribution System

One of the key features of this innovative vessel is its unique power distribution system. Unlike conventional hybrid systems, the eCSOV will utilize its large battery pack as the primary power source, with engines running solely for charging at a constant, optimized load. This approach not only enhances overall system performance but also minimizes energy losses and ensures seamless power distribution throughout the vessel.

Furthermore, the vessel’s DC grid architecture will enable offshore charging capabilities, allowing for simultaneous battery charging while maintaining dynamic positioning (DP) for station-keeping. This represents a significant advancement in the SOV market and showcases Corvus Energy’s commitment to driving innovation in the maritime industry.

Equipment from Corvus Energy will be delivered to the shipyard in 2026, with the vessel expected to be operational by 2027. Once in service, the eCSOV will support the commissioning and operation of wind farms, further demonstrating the vessel’s unique capabilities and the potential for fully electric vessels to revolutionize offshore operations.
