DP World Southampton Welcomes MV Leonidio Under Gemini Cooperation Agreement

DP World Southampton has recently heralded the arrival of MV Leonidio, marking the first ship to dock at the port under the Gemini Cooperation agreement established by industry giants Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk.

The MV Leonidio made its debut at the Southampton logistics hub on February 3 as part of its inaugural rotation on the Gemini Transatlantic AL1/AT3 service. This voyage will see the vessel calling at key ports in Northern Europe such as Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Wilhelmshaven before traversing the Atlantic to reach destinations in the US and Canada, including New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Saint John.

The Gemini Cooperation, unveiled in January 2024, represents a strategic move by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd to fortify the reliability of their East-West shipping networks. The collaboration aims to streamline mainliner services by minimizing port calls while offering a flexible and interconnected ocean network with unparalleled reliability. The partnership will see approximately 340 vessels integrated into Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd’s shared ocean network.

Furthermore, in line with their alliance with DP World, all of Gemini’s Middle East-Europe and Asia-Europe services will now be managed at London Gateway, complemented by their Trans-Atlantic operations at Southampton. The first Gemini vessel servicing the Asia-Europe route is slated to dock at London Gateway in the near future.
