Wärtsilä Commits to Reduce Suppliers’ Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Finland’s technology major Wärtsilä has strengthened its ‘Set for 30’ decarbonization targets by setting a new goal to reduce 25% of direct suppliers’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030.
The focus of this target is on Wärtsilä’s Tier 1 direct suppliers and includes their scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions related to deliveries to Wärtsilä. By expanding its decarbonization targets to include scope 3 GHG emissions, the company is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable future.
The new target is relative to a 2024 baseline of GHG emissions, with data collection from Tier 1 suppliers set for 2025. Wärtsilä is currently developing the methodology to track progress against this target.
Jan Kåre Helgeland, Director of Supply Management at Wärtsilä, emphasized the importance of suppliers in the company’s value chain and the impact of supply chain emissions on overall sustainability efforts. By involving direct Tier 1 suppliers in target-setting, Wärtsilä aims to maximize its decarbonization impact.
Wärtsilä initially announced its ‘Set for 30’ decarbonization targets in 2021, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality in its operations and offer a product portfolio ready for zero-carbon fuels by 2030. Since then, the company has made significant strides in reducing GHG emissions, including the adoption of green electricity and low-emission vehicles.
Investments in fuel flexibility, efficiency, and zero-carbon fuels have positioned Wärtsilä as a leader in sustainable technology. Recent innovations include an ammonia-fueled engine solution and a hydrogen-ready engine power plant, paving the way for cleaner energy solutions in the marine and energy industries.
One notable achievement is Wärtsilä’s partnership with CMA Ships to provide full-service packages for LNG-fueled containerships, demonstrating the company’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices.
