LiqTech International Secures Supplier Approval for Water Treatment System for WinGD Engines

The US-based manufacturer of specialized marine filtration products, LiqTech International, has recently announced that its water treatment system (WTS) has received supplier approval for Swiss marine engine developer WinGD’s two-stroke dual-fuel engines.

The WTS will be supplied to WinGD’s engines in both gas and diesel modes, showcasing LiqTech’s advanced technology in filtration.

LiqTech’s innovative system enables improved filtration, allowing for the reuse of up to 80-95% of feed water. This results in reduced freshwater consumption onboard and minimal wastewater discharge, aligning with global environmental regulations.

The core element of the system is silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic membranes, known for their durability in harsh environments due to their hardness, thermal conductivity, and chemical resistance. These membranes provide ultra-fine filtration, effectively removing contaminants, oil, and particulate matter from water.

With a modular design, LiqTech’s WTS is suitable for both retrofits and newbuilds, with the flexibility to increase capacity post-installation if required.

WinGD’s Engine Portfolio

WinGD, headquartered in Winterthur, offers a range of low-speed engines and gen-sets that operate on alternative fuels such as methanol, ammonia, and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Their X-DF-M, X-DF-A, and X-DF series, along with the diesel-fueled X-Engines, cater to diverse marine propulsion needs.

In particular, WinGD’s X-DF-A ammonia dual-fuel engine demonstrated stellar performance during testing in December 2024. It received approvals from classification societies like Lloyd’s Register and Bureau Veritas, showcasing its compliance with stringent industry standards.

Rising Demand for Dual-Fuel Engines

In recent years, the maritime industry has witnessed a surge in interest towards dual-fuel engines for their fleets. Data from Veson Nautical indicates a significant increase in the incorporation of dual-fuel solutions in vessels, with a notable rise from 4% in 2018 to 65% in the 2024 containership orderbook.

LiqTech emphasizes the need for reliable water treatment in vessels equipped with dual-fuel engines, particularly for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems. Clarksons Research forecasts a substantial number of new units with EGR solutions planned between 2024 and 2027.

Partnership with Danbee Marine

In a strategic move, LiqTech partnered with South Korean maritime representative Danbee Marine in July 2024 to market its marine scrubber water treatment solutions in South Korea. These solutions are designed to outperform discharge limits set by the International Maritime Organization’s Marpol VI regulation.
