ABB Secures Contract to Equip Portuguese Navy’s Offshore Patrol Vessels

By: ABB

ABB has recently announced a significant contract with the West Sea Shipyard in Portugal to provide an integrated power, propulsion, and automation system for six new offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) of the Portuguese Navy. The vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2031.

The cutting-edge technology to be installed on the vessels includes the Azipod® propulsion system, the Onboard DC Grid™ power system platform, and the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system. These solutions are designed to enhance operational efficiencies, reduce fuel consumption, and minimize emissions for the Portuguese Navy.

Renato Amorim, Director of West Sea Shipyard, expressed confidence in ABB’s advanced systems, stating, “ABB’s pioneering and proven integrated power, propulsion, and automation system was a choice of confidence for us providing flexibility, reliability, performance as well as fuel efficiency for better environmental performance.”

Sindre Satre, Business Line Manager at ABB Marine & Ports, also emphasized the importance of this partnership, saying, “We are honored that West Sea Shipyard and the Portuguese Navy have chosen our power, propulsion, and automation solution for these six high-specification offshore patrol vessels.”

Key Technologies

The Azipod® electric propulsion system offers enhanced maneuverability and operating efficiency by rotating 360 degrees, reducing fuel consumption compared to traditional shaftline systems.

The Onboard DC Grid™ power system platform is a modular and compact solution that optimizes power usage, reduces fuel consumption, and contributes to maritime decarbonization. Its fault tolerance maximizes safety and reliability.

The ABB Ability™ System 800xA® automation solution integrates various systems and equipment on board, providing a single user interface for seamless operations, enhancing efficiency and safety.
