All American Marine Delivers State-of-the-Art Research Vessel to Cal Poly Humboldt

All American Marine (AAM) has recently completed the delivery of a cutting-edge 78’ x 26.7’ semi-displacement aluminum catamaran to Cal Poly Humboldt. This vessel marks a significant milestone in marine research capabilities for the university, serving as a dedicated scientific exploration platform along the Northern California and Oregon coasts.

Designed for Excellence

Designed by renowned naval architect Nic de Waal of Teknicraft Design, the RV North Wind incorporates the latest advancements in marine technology. Drawing inspiration from successful research vessels such as the R/V Shackleford and the University of Hawaii’s R/V Imua, this catamaran is poised to revolutionize research initiatives in oceanography, marine ecosystems, and offshore wind studies.

State-of-the-Art Features

Constructed to meet US Coast Guard Subchapter T standards, the RV North Wind boasts twin MAN D2862LE43B EPA Tier 4 engines equipped with diesel particulate filters. Compliant with California’s stringent environmental regulations, the vessel delivers exceptional performance, capable of cruising at speeds exceeding 28 knots at 80% engine load.

The hydrofoil-assisted hull design by Teknicraft reduces drag, enhances fuel efficiency, and ensures a smooth sailing experience even in rough seas. With a CFD-modeled hull shape that minimizes wake energy, the North Wind is optimized for long-duration research missions, making it a versatile and reliable research platform.

Advanced Research Capabilities

Equipped with a state-of-the-art Kongsberg ADCP electronics suite, a fixed WASSP multibeam system, and Okeanus deck handling equipment, the North Wind provides researchers with cutting-edge tools for oceanographic research. The vessel features wet and dry labs, a computer lab, and comfortable live-aboard quarters, ensuring a conducive environment for scientific exploration.

With accommodations for up to 14 live-aboard researchers, including full bunks, a spacious bathroom with a shower, and onboard laundry facilities, the North Wind is designed for extended missions. A galley and common areas further enhance collaboration opportunities, making it an ideal platform for multi-day scientific operations.

Supporting Marine Conservation

The RV North Wind will enable Cal Poly Humboldt researchers, students, and partners to access and study diverse marine environments, contributing valuable insights to the management and conservation of California’s marine resources. Additionally, the vessel’s fuel-efficient propulsion system and advanced research equipment make it a sustainable and effective platform for offshore research missions.

With the capacity to accommodate up to 40 daytime passengers, the North Wind opens up possibilities for a wide range of research and educational activities, further solidifying its role as a pioneering vessel in the field of marine science.
