All inter-array cables in place at Germany’s 960 MW offshore wind farm

Completion of Inter-Array Cable Installation at EnBW’s He Dreiht Offshore Wind Farm

All inter-array cables have been installed at EnBW’s He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

Seaway7 announced the successful completion of the installation of the last inter-array cable at the He Dreiht project. This cable connects the 13th and final string of the offshore wind farm to the BorWin epsilon converter platform, which forms part of the BorWin5 grid connection.

The installation process began on March 10, with the vessels Seaway Aimery and Seaway Moxie handling the laying and pulling of all 64 cables. Currently, Seaway Aimery is engaged in trenching the last cables, while the teams onboard Seaway Moxie are finalizing the stripping, routing, and jointing works.

Seaway7 was awarded an engineering, procurement, installation, and commissioning (EPIC) contract for the inter-array cables at He Dreiht in 2022. The 66 kV subsea array cables were manufactured by JDR Cable Systems under a contract signed with Seaway7 the same year.

He Dreiht is set to be Germany’s largest offshore wind farm under construction, boasting a total output of 960 MW. This capacity will be sufficient to power approximately 1.1 million households with clean electricity once operational.

The offshore wind farm is currently in the wind turbine installation phase following the successful installation of the first Vestas 15 MW turbine earlier this year. The project is progressing towards its completion, with expectations for the wind farm to start operation by late 2025.

He Dreiht is jointly owned by EnBW (50.1%) and a consortium comprising Allianz Capital Partners, AIP, and Norges Bank Investment Management (49.9%). The project represents a significant step forward in Germany’s renewable energy transition and contributes to the country’s ambitious climate goals.
