APM Terminals announced the completion of the last phase of its Medport Tangier expansion project, which added 2 million TEU capacity, solidifying its position as one of the most highly advanced container terminals in the world.

This is a major milestone as the facility now boasts a 5.2 million TEU annual capacity with a 2 km long berth. The development comes in time to support the new collaboration between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd which will be launched in February 2025.

The terminal with its increased capacity will play a vital role in the Gemini Cooperation and serve as a hub port for Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd’s East-West Trade Routes.

The World Bank and S&P Global ranked Tangier as the 4th most efficient container terminal in the world. The project also created a lot of employment opportunities and 500 new jobs were filled in 2023 and 2024.

The newly expanded facility has cutting-edge technology, auto mooring systems, digital berth planning, and a specialized Gemini simulation tool.

The technology also aims to reduce carbon emissions and take environmental well-being into consideration. It will aid in reducing port hours, improve crane productivity, and decrease direct emissions from ships utilizing shore power.
