APM Terminals and SANY Marine Collaborate to Drive Decarbonization in Port Operations
APM Terminals, a container terminal operator based in the Netherlands and part of Danish shipping and logistics giant Maersk, has joined forces with SANY Marine, a Chinese port and logistics equipment provider, to accelerate decarbonization efforts in the global port industry.
The master framework agreement was officially signed during a ceremony held in Zhuhai, China, on June 3, 2025.
As part of the agreement, SANY Marine will supply battery-electric terminal tractors to APM Terminals, marking a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability strategy. The plan is to replace around 500 diesel-powered terminal tractors across APM Terminals’ global network with battery-electric models by 2030.
“APM Terminals is committed to accelerating the decarbonization of our operations through the adoption of battery-electric equipment, renewable energy sources, and energy efficiency measures,” stated Olaf Gelhausen, the COO of APM Terminals.
“This collaboration exemplifies our dedication to tangible action in reducing our carbon footprint. By standardizing our equipment and implementing battery-electric solutions across our terminals, we are paving the way towards achieving net-zero emissions,” Gelhausen added.
“Securing this partnership with APM Terminals marks a significant milestone for SANY Marine and the industry as a whole. This is our largest global electric terminal truck order to date, and we are proud to support APM Terminals in their journey towards fully decarbonized terminal operations,” commented Jeff Fu, CEO of SANY Marine.
The partnership between APM Terminals and SANY Marine aligns with the objectives of the Zero Emission Port Alliance, which was established by APM Terminals in December 2023 to promote sustainability in port operations.
Furthermore, Gelhausen highlighted the progress made in the development and cost-effectiveness of battery-electric equipment over the past few years, emphasizing the industry-wide benefits of such advancements in achieving net-zero goals.
On a related note, APM Terminals and Vietnam’s Hateco Group recently inaugurated the Hateco Haiphong International Container Terminal (HHIT) in Haiphong, Vietnam. The new terminal at Lach Huyen port features two deep-water berths capable of servicing mega vessel services of up to 18,000 TEU size.
With a focus on innovation and sustainability, the collaboration between APM Terminals and SANY Marine sets a precedent for green port operations and underscores the importance of industry partnerships in driving decarbonization efforts.
