Manila South Harbor Expansion Boosts Philippines Trade Capacity

DP World and the Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI) have recently completed the Manila South Harbor (MSH) expansion project, enhancing the capabilities of Philippines’ largest port in Manila. This modernized harbor is set to accommodate more trade in the rapidly growing Southeast Asia corridor.

The MSH expansion, costing approximately $100 million, included the extension of a pier, dredging to a depth of 13 meters, yard expansion for 20,000 TEU capacity, and the acquisition of two new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes. This development will increase MSH’s annual capacity to two million TEUs, a significant jump from the current 1.45 million TEUs.

The two neo-post-panamax STS cranes, among the largest in the Philippines, boast an outreach of 58 meters and can handle vessels carrying up to 20 containers wide. With cargo throughput at MSH steadily rising over the past decade, reaching 1.3 million TEUs last year, the expanded facilities are expected to further drive trade growth.

DP World’s presence extends beyond MSH to include operations in Batangas Port, Cavite Barge Terminal, and various inland logistics terminals. ATI serves as DP World’s local partner in the Philippines, solidifying their commitment to enhancing the country’s trade infrastructure.

Government Support for Port Modernization

Recognizing the importance of modernizing key ports, the Philippines has allocated funds for port expansion projects. In December, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) unveiled 66 projects totaling over $420 million. Progress is evident, with upgrades like the $10 million Banago port expansion in Bacolod city nearing completion by June 2025.

The Banago port project includes road network expansion, upgrades to the roro marshalling yard, and construction of a three-story passenger and operations building. This investment represents a significant infrastructure enhancement for Negros Island, showcasing the government’s commitment to improving port facilities nationwide.

In conclusion, the completion of the Manila South Harbor expansion and ongoing port modernization efforts signal a positive outlook for the Philippines’ trade industry. With strategic partnerships and government support, the country is poised to strengthen its position as a key player in the regional maritime landscape.
