Professor Nerilie Abram Appointed Chief Scientist of Australian Antarctic Program

The Australian Antarctic Program has announced the appointment of Professor Nerilie Abram from the Australian National University as its new Chief Scientist. With a background in climate science, Abram brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role.

Professor Abram expressed her excitement and honor in taking on the position, highlighting the importance of Antarctic research in understanding and addressing climate change. She emphasized the critical role that the Australian Antarctic Program plays in protecting Antarctica and preparing for the impact of changes in the region on a global scale.

Having participated in various Antarctic research initiatives, including the Denman Terrestrial Campaign, Abram is well-versed in the challenges and opportunities of studying this unique environment. She has previously served as the Chair of the Academy of Science National Committee on Antarctic Research and represented Australia on the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research.

Upon assuming her new role, Professor Abram will focus on implementing a new decadal science strategy that aims to advance research efforts within the Australian Antarctic Division. She plans to collaborate with the scientific community to develop innovative research plans and leverage the collective expertise available.

Professor Abram’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Australian Antarctic science, with significant investments being made in research infrastructure and capabilities. Projects such as the Million Year Ice Core traverse and advancements in climate modeling are opening up new avenues for exploration and discovery.

Emma Campbell, the Head of the Australian Antarctic Division, welcomed Professor Abram’s appointment, noting the important role she will play in shaping the future of Antarctic and Southern Ocean research. The Division is preparing for key expeditions, including an environmental management voyage to Heard Island and McDonald Islands, and the ongoing Million Year Ice Core campaign.
