Baker Hughes Launches Industry’s First All-Electric Subsea Production System

Energy technology company Baker Hughes has introduced its groundbreaking all-electric subsea production system, marking a significant milestone in offshore operations. This innovative system represents the industry’s first fully electric topside-to-downhole solution, offering a range of benefits for oil and gas production.

Enhanced Production Control and Lower Carbon Emissions

The modular design of the all-electric subsea production system allows for seamless integration with existing tree designs, enabling easy transition to electric operations. Additionally, electro-hydraulic trees in mature assets can be retrofitted for full electrification, leading to enhanced production control, increased reliability, and lower carbon emissions over the field’s lifespan.

By eliminating hydraulics from the production process, the system also reduces costs, installation time, and complexity associated with subsea installations, making it a more efficient and sustainable solution for offshore operations.

Versatile Applications for Various Offshore Developments

The all-electric subsea production system is designed to accommodate both shallow and deep-water developments, making it an ideal choice for subsea carbon capture, utilization, and storage fields, as well as long offset tieback applications. This versatility allows for the system to be deployed in a wide range of offshore settings, providing flexibility and efficiency in production operations.

Commitment to Cleaner and More Efficient Energy Production

Baker Hughes’ executive vice president, Amerino Gatti, emphasized the importance of producing energy resources with minimal carbon footprint. By electrifying the production value chain, the company aims to enhance operations to be cleaner, safer, and more efficient, while meeting global energy demands sustainably.

In addition to the all-electric subsea production system, Baker Hughes has also introduced the Hummingbird all-electric land cementing unit and SureCONTROL Plus interval control valves for enhanced control in oil and gas operations. These technologies offer improved efficiency, reduced emissions, and enhanced performance for traditional and new energy applications.

Advancements in Electric Technology for Oil and Gas Industry

The Hummingbird all-electric land cementing unit replaces traditional diesel engines with grid-connected or battery-powered motors, reducing emissions and noise levels during onshore cementing operations. The dual-power functionality of the unit provides a more sustainable and efficient solution for cementing operations.

SureCONTROL Plus interval control valves enable electrical remote operations for zonal control of subsea and dry tree wells, simplifying installations, reducing rig time, and improving production efficiency. The digital telemetry system offers continuous data for enhanced asset performance management and proactive maintenance of downhole tools.

Overall, Baker Hughes’ all-electric subsea production system and accompanying technologies represent a significant step towards cleaner, safer, and more efficient energy production in the oil and gas industry.
