Spanish Ferry Operator Baleària Completes Docking Tests for Sustainable Fast Ferry Avemar Dos
Spanish ferry operator Baleària has successfully concluded the initial docking tests for its eco-friendly fast ferry Avemar Dos at the Port of Tarifa. The 82-meter-long catamaran, capable of accommodating up to 900 passengers, underwent retrofitting to align with the maritime industry’s growing sustainability efforts and regulatory standards.
The vessel, equipped with modernized engines, boasts reduced harmful pollutant emissions, positioning it as a frontrunner in environmentally conscious maritime transportation. Baleària’s commitment to sustainability is further exemplified by its recent launch of operations on the Tarifa-Tangier Ville route, scheduled to begin in early May.
With a fleet of over 40 vessels, including eleven featuring dual-fuel engine technology, Baleària prioritizes clean fuels and carbon-neutral renewable energy sources. Notable examples include the LNG-powered fast ferries Eleanor Roosevelt and Margarita Salas, heralded for their eco-friendly operations.
Looking ahead, Baleària unveiled plans for two 100% electric, zero-emission fast ferries designed to operate on the pioneering green corridor between Spain and Morocco. Set to be constructed at the Armon shipyard in Gijón, these electric catamarans reflect Baleària’s forward-looking approach to sustainable maritime solutions.
In collaboration with the Algeciras Bay Port Authority, Baleària secured the management contract for the Tarifa-Tangier Ville line, emphasizing technical and environmental criteria in establishing the first intercontinental green route.
Baleària’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond vessel operations, with active participation in biofuel projects like biomethane and bioLNG. The company also explores innovative energy sources such as green hydrogen as part of its ambitious goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
