Spain-Morocco Green Corridor: Baleària’s Pioneering Initiative

Spanish ferry operator Baleària is leading the way in sustainable transportation with its latest project to establish the first green corridor between Spain and Morocco. This initiative will be facilitated by two cutting-edge, 100% electric fast ferries that produce zero emissions.

These revolutionary vessels will operate on the “most sustainable” route connecting Europe and Africa, linking Tarifa, Spain, and Tangier, Morocco.

“This project is a testament to our commitment to innovation and sustainability. It marks the first time a route of this magnitude will be powered solely by electric energy, ensuring zero emissions,” stated Adolfo Utor, President and Owner of Baleària.

In December, Baleària secured a 15-year contract from the Algeciras Bay Port Authority to manage the Tarifa-Tangier Ville line. The decision was based on prioritizing technical and environmental considerations, making it the first intercontinental green line.

“The Port Authority’s vision aligns perfectly with our values of sustainability and innovation. We are committed to transforming the Tarifa-Tangier Ville route into a beacon of modern, eco-friendly transportation,” emphasized Utor.

Green Technology and Innovation

The twin catamarans will be constructed at the Armon shipyard in Gijón over the next two and a half years. Each vessel will boast 16 MW of electric power, powered by four electric propulsion units fueled by batteries with a capacity of 11,500 kWh. This setup will enable the ships to complete the entire 18-mile journey under electric propulsion, free from emissions.

“These will be completely decarbonized voyages, aligning with the objectives set for 2050,” Utor highlighted. He also noted that electric propulsion not only eliminates emissions but also reduces noise and vibrations.

Additionally, each ship will be equipped with four diesel combustion backup generators totaling 11,200 kW to address any unforeseen circumstances.

Innovative Charging Infrastructure

The ferries’ batteries will be recharged during the one-hour layover in each port. Innovative autonomous robotic arms will be installed in Tarifa and Tangier, connected to the ships via an onshore power system (OPS) for rapid charging. This system will replenish the batteries required for the journey in just 40 minutes.

With a total battery capacity of 39 MWh gross, equivalent to around 765 electric cars, the vessels will set new standards in sustainable maritime transport.

Collaborative Efforts for a Greener Future

Utor emphasized that the project is a collaborative effort involving a Spanish shipping company, shipyard, financier, and other key national and international partners in engineering and energy fields.

“This initiative serves as a green bridge uniting two nations with a rich history and strong economic ties,” Utor remarked.

The Spanish government has also lauded Baleària’s commitment to sustainability. José Antonio Santano, the Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, commended the company’s efforts in promoting decarbonization and innovation.

Future Prospects and Economic Impact

Andalusia’s Minister of Tourism and External Affairs, Arturo Bernal, praised Baleària’s role in spearheading sustainable initiatives in the region. The project is expected to attract four million passengers, driving economic growth and employment opportunities.

The Algeciras Bay Port Authority President, Gerardo Landaluce, emphasized the importance of energy transition and environmental protection through electrification projects in the region.

Next-Generation Green Ships

Baleària’s commitment to eco-efficient vessels is evident in the design of its new electric ferries. These ships, optimized for the Tarifa-Tangier Ville route, will offer enhanced efficiency and sustainability features while accommodating 804 passengers and 225 cars.

With a focus on zero emissions by 2050, Baleària continues to lead the way in adopting green technologies and fostering a more sustainable maritime industry.
