Ballard Power Systems to Supply 6.4 MW of Fuel Cell Engines for Emission-Free Marine Propulsion

Ballard Power Systems has recently announced the signing of a new purchase order for the supply of 6.4 MW of fuel cell engines to eCap Marine GmbH, a leading expert in emission-free power solutions. These fuel cell engines will be deployed on two vessels operated by Samskip, one of Europe’s largest multimodal operators specializing in short sea, rail, road, and barge services.

The order includes 32 FCwave-200 kW engines that will be integrated into green marine propulsion systems by eCap Marine. These engines will power two vessels in Samskip’s fleet, decarbonizing routes between Norway and the Netherlands. The delivery of the fuel cell engines is scheduled for 2025 and 2026, marking a significant step towards sustainable shipping practices.

Ballard’s FCwave is the world’s first DNV, Lloyd, and ABS type-approved fuel cell module specifically designed for marine applications. This certification ensures compliance with international maritime safety and design standards, making it a reliable and efficient solution for emission-free marine propulsion.

This purchase order is supported by ENOVA, Norway’s government agency for energy and climate initiatives, highlighting the commitment to promoting sustainable technologies in the maritime industry. The collaboration between Ballard Power Systems, eCap Marine, and Samskip demonstrates a shared vision for a cleaner and greener future for maritime transportation.

By leveraging fuel cell technology for marine propulsion, these companies are leading the way in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning towards a more sustainable shipping industry. The deployment of fuel cell engines on Samskip’s vessels represents a significant milestone in the adoption of clean energy solutions in the maritime sector.
