BAR Technologies Receives Type Approval for WindWings from Bureau Veritas

UK-based wind propulsion provider BAR Technologies has recently achieved a significant milestone with the receipt of type approval from the esteemed French class society Bureau Veritas (BV) for its innovative 37.5-meter WindWings. These rigid sail technologies harness wind propulsion in a cutting-edge manner.

The Type Approval Design Certificate (TADC) issued by BV signifies that WindWings adhere to international standards, opening the doors for widespread adoption by ship owners and operators worldwide. Among the early adopters of this wind-assisted propulsion solution under BV certification is UK shipping company Union Maritime.

BAR Technologies’ WindWings now hold the distinction of being one of the select few solutions endorsed by multiple class societies, following the TADC granted by DNV in 2023.

Features and Benefits of WindWings

The 37.5-meter WindWings boast a three-element rigid wingsail design that delivers 2.5 times the lift compared to conventional systems. Operating without the need for external power, this innovative technology is projected to save up to 1.5 tonnes of fuel and 4.7 tonnes of CO2 emissions per day, according to BAR Technologies.

Moreover, WindWings can be seamlessly integrated into newbuilds or retrofitted onto existing vessels, offering a versatile solution for a wide range of maritime applications.

Expansion with New WindWing Models

In response to the escalating demand from shipowners and operators in the industry, BAR Technologies introduced new 20- and 24-meter WindWing models in September 2024. These compact and lightweight versions of the original patented three-element design cater to vessels such as Handymax bulkers, chemical tankers, and general cargo ships.

The enhanced WindWing models are designed to deliver substantial environmental benefits, saving over 500 tonnes of CO2 per unit annually with a payback period of less than five years. Weighing less than 30 tonnes, these new models are suitable for both newbuild installations and retrofitting onto existing ships, further expanding the potential reach of this sustainable propulsion solution.

BAR Technologies’ continuous innovation and commitment to environmentally friendly maritime solutions underscore the growing significance of wind propulsion in the shipping industry, with WindWings leading the charge towards a greener future.
