SSE Renewables Conducts Benthic Survey at Berwick Bank Offshore Wind Farm Site
SSE Renewables is currently conducting a benthic survey within a potential offshore export cable route at the Berwick Bank offshore wind farm site in Scotland.
The benthic survey is being carried out by Natural Power, using the Windcat 20 as the survey vessel. The survey, which began on April 1, is expected to last four days.
During the survey, the vessel will deploy underwater drop-down video/camera equipment and a mini Hamon grab to collect data on the seabed’s ecology.
The subtidal benthic survey is scheduled for completion by April 7, with provisions for weather delays extending the notice until August 31.
The Berwick Bank offshore wind farm, located in the North Sea in the outer Firth of Forth, has the potential to generate up to 4.1 GW of installed capacity.
SSE Renewables estimates that the project will be able to power over six million homes with renewable energy once operational. A planning application for development and construction was submitted to the Scottish government in late 2022.
The offshore wind farm has secured two connection points to the UK electricity grid, one in East Lothian and another in the Blyth area of Northumberland, ensuring efficient distribution of the generated renewable energy.
