Birdon Commences Construction on New Waterways Commerce Cutter

[By: Birdon]

Today, Birdon announced the commencement of construction on the first new Waterways Commerce Cutter (WCC), marking a significant step towards revitalizing the aging Inland Waterways fleet of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Birdon has invested over $27 million in capital improvements at its shipyard in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, to support the construction of these vessels. This strategic investment underscores Birdon’s commitment to delivering essential capabilities to the Coast Guard and positions the company to construct multiple WCC vessels simultaneously, establishing a modern shipyard for future projects.

“Our team is excited to advance the WCC program with the start of construction,” said Tony Ardito, President of Birdon. “We value our partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard and remain dedicated to fulfilling this critical initiative.”

By collaborating with local educational institutions and labor firms in the Gulf Coast region, Birdon is actively expanding its workforce through training programs and apprenticeships. The newly launched Birdon Futures Apprenticeship program offers specialized training in various shipbuilding disciplines, contributing to the growth of skilled workers in the industry.

Small businesses play a significant role in the WCC program, with over 70% of the contract work allocated to small enterprises, many of which are situated in the Gulf Coast area. Birdon has facilitated the involvement of these businesses by ensuring compliance with stringent quality standards, promoting economic development within the local community.

The $1.187 billion contract awarded to Birdon in 2022 encompasses the design and construction of 27 WCC vessels, comprising River Buoy Tenders and Inland Construction Tenders. These vessels are crucial for maintaining the U.S. Marine Transportation System, which supports a vast network of waterways handling millions of tons of cargo annually.

With the current Inland Waterways fleet aging beyond 50 years, the introduction of new WCCs will enhance the Coast Guard’s capabilities in safeguarding maritime activities, including search and rescue operations, environmental protection, and port security.

The innovative approach taken by Birdon in modernizing the Inland Waterways fleet underscores its commitment to excellence and sustainability in the maritime industry.
