Major Oil Discovery Made by BW Energy in Gabon

Oslo-listed oil and gas E&P player BW Energy has announced a significant oil discovery at the Bourdon prospect in the Dussafu license off the coast of Gabon, Africa. This discovery was made using a Borr Drilling jack-up rig, marking a milestone in the company’s exploration efforts.

Details of the Discovery

The Bourdon prospect, located near the Tortue field and the FPSO unit BW Adolo, has been described as substantial with good reservoir quality. The well was drilled to a total depth of 4,135 meters, revealing around 34 meters of pay in an overall hydrocarbon column of 45 meters in the Gamba formation.

BW Energy, as the operator of the block with a 73.5% interest, is joined by partners Panoro Energy and Gabon Oil Company, holding 17.5% and 9% interests, respectively. The success of the Bourdon appraisal well has opened up the potential for a new development cluster in the area, with plans for further appraisal and potential production facilities.

Implications of the Discovery

According to BW Energy CEO Carl K. Arnet, the Bourdon discovery highlights the significant resource potential of the Dussafu license, with multiple additional prospects waiting to be explored. The company is considering a second sidetrack to further appraise the discovery and potentially establish a new development cluster following the success of the MaBoMo offshore production facility.

John Hamilton, CEO of Panoro Energy, expressed optimism about the outcome of the drilling campaign in Dussafu, noting the potential for increased production and estimated resources in the region. The addition of new production wells and oil discoveries has boosted total gross production on the block to approximately 40,000 barrels of oil per day.

Future Plans and Contracts

Borr Drilling’s Norve jack-up rig played a crucial role in the successful drilling campaign at Dussafu, with the Bourdon discovery expected to add significant reserves to BW Energy’s portfolio. The rig is set to embark on a new multi-well contract in West Africa, signaling continued exploration and development activities in the region.

Overall, the oil discovery at the Bourdon prospect represents a major achievement for BW Energy and its partners, paving the way for future growth and development opportunities in Gabon’s offshore oil and gas sector.
