BP Wraps Up Drilling Activities in Egyptian Exclusive Economic Zone
UK-headquartered energy giant BP has completed drilling activities at two wells within the Egyptian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Mediterranean Sea, with plans to bring them into production next month. Subsea commissioning operations are currently underway as BP partners with Valaris-owned drillship for exploration endeavors in the East Mediterranean (East Med).
Success in the East Med Region
The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources in Egypt has announced a new success in the East Med region following the completion of drilling activities at the Raven field by BP. Two new wells at the Raven field will contribute to gas production, while BP also embarks on an exploration project at Elking off the coast of Egypt.
West Nile Delta Concession
BP operated the drilling and completion of the two wells at the West Nile Delta (WND) concession using Valaris’ DS-12 drillship. The project was part of a four-well contract initiated in November 2022 for offshore operations in Egypt. Subsea Integration Alliance, a partnership between Subsea7 and OneSubsea, was selected by BP for a two-well tie-back project at the Raven field within the WND development.
West Nile Delta Project
The West Nile Delta project, one of the largest in the Mediterranean, covers five fields with 25 producing wells. Gas production from the project began in 2017, with additional fields coming online in subsequent years. The project aims to maximize natural gas production and operational efficiency within Egypt’s national grid.
Future Exploration and Production
Subsea hookup and commissioning activities are currently in progress to connect the new wells to the existing subsea network, with production expected to commence in February 2025. The Valaris DS-12 drillship is now moving to the Elking exploration area for further drilling activities targeting natural gas reservoirs.
Joint Ventures and Industry Growth
BP’s recent joint venture with ADNOC in Egypt aims to expand the gas portfolio and drive investment in hydrocarbon exploration and field development. The collaboration aligns with Egypt’s goal to drill 586 oil and gas wells by 2030 while exploring opportunities in renewable energy deployment for a greener electricity grid.
