Woodfibre Management Plans to Expand Workforce Accommodation for LNG Project
Woodfibre Management, a Canadian company based in Vancouver, is making strides to enhance its workforce accommodation for the $5.1 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project in British Columbia, Canada. The company is seeking approval to introduce a second floating workforce accommodation unit, known as a floatel, to support the project’s development.
Currently, construction is underway at the Woodfibre LNG site, with plans to add a second floatel adjacent to the existing MV Isabelle X, located near Squamish. This expansion is expected to create approximately 900 skilled trades job opportunities for the project.
The addition of the second floatel aims to minimize the impact on the local community by providing on-site living accommodations for the construction workforce. This strategic move will alleviate housing market pressures, reduce local traffic congestion, and lessen the strain on civic and health services in Squamish.
CEO’s Perspective
Luke Schauerte, CEO of Woodfibre LNG, emphasized the significance of diversifying Canada’s energy markets through the project. He stated, “Woodfibre LNG will make Canadian LNG more accessible to Asian markets, creating employment opportunities and advancing energy exports.”
If approved, the second floatel will accelerate construction, ensuring timely completion of the world’s first net-zero LNG export facility and supporting Canada’s energy sector diversification goals.
Regulatory Approvals
The regulatory framework for the second floatel was established through amendments to the project’s environmental assessment certificate by the provincial government and approval from the Squamish Nation. The project will undergo rigorous regulatory reviews to meet environmental and community impact standards.
Bridgemans Services Group, a Canadian company, will handle the retrofitting and operation of the second floatel, maintaining the project’s net-zero mandate and environmental commitments. Brian Grange, President of Bridgemans, affirmed the company’s commitment to upholding high standards for workforce accommodation.
Project Overview
Woodfibre LNG, a partnership between Pacific Energy Corporation and Enbridge, is pioneering as the first industrial project in Canada to recognize Squamish Nation as a full environmental regulator. The project aims to produce 2.1 million tons of LNG annually, setting the stage for the world’s first net-zero LNG facility by 2027.
