Woodfibre LNG Project Progressing with Foundation and Marine Piling Work
Woodfibre Management, a privately held Canadian company based in Vancouver, is pushing forward with its $5.1 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project by focusing on foundation and marine piling work. The project is set to be the world’s first LNG export facility to achieve net zero emissions by 2027.
The construction activities are in full swing at the Woodfibre LNG facility, with ongoing foundation and marine piling work to prepare for the arrival and installation of the planned 2.1 million-ton-per-year export terminal near Squamish, British Columbia (B.C.).
Construction Milestones
The construction phase began in August 2023, with the fabrication of the first of 18 modules for the project at the Qingdao McDermott Wuchuan (QMW) fabrication yard. The delivery of all modules, totaling 34,359 MT, is expected in the third quarter of 2025.
Significant Progress in 2024
Throughout 2024, the Woodfibre LNG project achieved several milestones, including progress on the marine offloading facility, pouring of concrete foundations, and marine work to support mooring structures for floating storage tanks.
Work on the south side of the site involved the removal of old infrastructure and preparation for the floatel, with new riprap placed along the shoreline for erosion protection. North of Mill Creek, construction of the marine offloading facility progressed with foreshore building and in-water pile installation work completed.
Environmental Safeguards and Preparation Work
Woodfibre LNG emphasizes rigorous environmental safeguards, including a marine mammal monitoring program, to ensure compliance with environmental management plans. The project also undertook tree clearing, blasting, and excavation to prepare the future liquefaction facility location.
Future Milestones
Looking ahead to 2025, Woodfibre LNG anticipates the arrival of the first modules and continued development towards completing the world’s first net-zero LNG export facility. The project, owned by Woodfibre LNG partnership, is making progress towards achieving its ambitious goals.
Project Ownership and Cost Estimates
The LNG development project, owned by Woodfibre LNG partnership with a 70% stake held by Pacific Energy Corporation and 30% by Enbridge, was initially estimated to cost $1.6 billion before a revision in the summer of 2022 increased the projected cost to $5.1 billion.
