Carnival Corporation and Fincantieri Announce New Cruise Ship Order for AIDA Brand

Carnival Corporation and Fincantieri have signed a new order for cruise ship construction for Carnival’s AIDA brand, marking the group’s first new order since the pause in operations in 2020. This move signals Carnival’s efforts to resume shipbuilding and expand its brands outside the U.S., following a period of focus on its Carnival Cruise Line.

CEO Josh Weinstein expressed optimism about the future during a media briefing, citing the corporation’s success in reducing debt and noting a significant increase in demand for cruising globally. In FY 2024, Carnival Corporation reported a 40% increase in EBITDA earnings, reaching $6.1 billion, and nearly doubled its operating income for the first quarter of the year with $5.8 billion in revenues.

Expansion Plans and Ship Orders

Carnival Corporation had previously announced plans to add new cruise ships at a rate of approximately one per year across its nine brands. In 2024, the corporation ordered seven cruise ships for Carnival Cruise Line, scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2033 from shipyards in Germany and Italy. Additionally, one legacy order for Princess Cruises is due for delivery this year.

The latest order with Fincantieri is valued at over €2 billion ($2.2 billion) and marks the first collaboration between Fincantieri and AIDA. The two midsized cruise ships will fall between the size of AIDA’s Helios Class and Hyperion Class vessels, with 2,100 passenger cabins each. Delivery is expected in early 2030 and late 2031.

Sustainability Focus

The new ships will feature multi-fuel engines capable of running on LNG, bio-diesel, and other sustainable fuels, aligning with AIDA’s commitment to sustainability. AIDA has a history of pioneering eco-friendly initiatives, including the use of LNG engines and shore power technology on previous vessels.

Future Enhancements and Revitalization

AIDA President Felix Eichhorn announced that the new ships will introduce innovative features and experiences to the brand, expanding its fleet to 13 ships. In addition to the new order, AIDA has launched a revitalization program for three existing cruise ships, starting with AIDAdiva and continuing with AIDAluna and AIDAbella in the coming years. The program includes technological upgrades and enhancements to passenger areas, such as new dining options and themed restaurants.

Strong Performance and Market Focus

AIDA has been a standout performer in Carnival Corporation’s portfolio, catering to the German-speaking market with a focus on delivering exceptional cruise experiences.
