COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers Takes Delivery of Zero-Emissions General Cargo Ship
COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers has recently welcomed the Green Rizhao, a 77,000dwt general cargo ship that has been certified as being constructed with zero carbon emissions by the China Classification Society (CCS).
The Green Rizhao is set to embark on its maiden voyage, where it will be tasked with transporting machinery and containers from various Chinese ports to Brazil.
China’s Shipbuilding Industry Dominance
China’s shipbuilding industry has been flourishing, with the nation accounting for 55.7% of global deliveries and 74.1% of orders in 2024. The country’s shipbuilding capabilities have significantly evolved, with the construction of massive vessels such as 24,000 TEU container ships, LNG carriers, and cruise ships like the Adora Magic City. Another cruise ship is currently in the works.
Notably, China Shipbuilding Group and Qatar Energy Group recently inked contracts for the construction of the world’s largest 271,000 cubic meter ultra-large LNG carriers, marking the largest single shipbuilding order in history.
Furthermore, China is actively preparing for the rise of alternative fuels in the maritime industry, as evidenced by its market share in this sector surging from 31.5% in 2021 to 78.5% in 2024.
Global Implications
However, China’s rapid growth in the shipbuilding sector has raised concerns internationally. The U.S. Trade Representative’s office recently flagged China’s targeted dominance of the global shipbuilding, maritime, and logistics industries as “unreasonable” and potentially “actionable” under U.S. trade law.
As China continues to expand its presence in the maritime domain, the global industry landscape may witness significant shifts and challenges in the coming years.
