New 20 MW Floating Wind Turbine Successfully Hoisted in China

A groundbreaking new 20 MW wind turbine designed for floating applications has recently been successfully hoisted in China, marking a significant milestone in the exploration of ultra-large offshore wind turbines. The state-owned company CRRC has developed the world’s largest power-class floating wind turbine, named “Qihang,” which is set to revolutionize offshore wind energy production.

Design and Testing

The “Qihang” is a 20 MW floating offshore wind turbine that was independently developed by CRRC. After rolling off the production line in Sheyang, Jiangsu, in October 2024, the unit was transported to the Shandong Dongying Wind Power Equipment Testing and Certification Innovation Base for testing. With a diameter of 260 meters and a hub height of 151 meters, the massive scale of the turbine sets a new standard in offshore wind technology.

CRRC reports that the design of the “Qihang” surpasses other prototypes, with a power output of 20 MW exceeding Envision Energy’s 16.7 MW and Dongfang Electric’s 18 MW units. Mingyang Wind Power is also working on a 22 MW turbine, highlighting China’s commitment to leading the offshore wind sector.

Environmental Impact and Innovation

The “Qihang” is not only impressive in size but also in its environmental benefits. Each rotation of the turbine can meet the electricity demand of a family for 2 to 4 days, significantly reducing coal consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The unit integrates cutting-edge control technologies for stability and typhoon resistance, ensuring optimal performance in challenging offshore conditions.

With over 200 test points covering various components, including blades, frames, and mooring systems, the “Qihang” is designed to withstand diverse wind, wave, and current conditions at sea. Once the testing and certifications are complete, the unit will be deployed for grid-connected power generation in deep-sea areas.

Global Expansion

China’s ambition to dominate the offshore wind sector extends beyond its borders, with plans to become a key supplier to European projects. By pushing the boundaries of offshore wind technology with the “Qihang” turbine, CRRC and other Chinese companies aim to solidify their position in the international market.

Overall, the successful hoisting of the 20 MW floating wind turbine in China represents a significant achievement in the renewable energy industry. With its innovative design, environmental benefits, and potential for global expansion, the “Qihang” turbine is poised to make a lasting impact on offshore wind energy production.
