The Yuan Hai Kou: China’s Revolutionary Ocean-Going Solar and LNG-Powered Cargo Ship

The Yuan Hai Kou, hailed as China’s largest ocean-going solar- and liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered cargo ship, has set sail on its maiden voyage from Nansha, Guangzhou. This groundbreaking vessel marks a new era in sustainable shipping technology.

A New Chapter in Green Shipping

As disclosed, the 7,000 CEU PV + LNG dual-fuel car carrier was fully loaded with Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs), showcasing its capacity to transport a wide range of vehicles while minimizing its environmental impact. The vessel will journey to countries along the Belt and Road Initiative, promoting sustainable trade practices.

Technical Specifications and Innovations

The Yuan Hai Kou boasts impressive technical specifications, including a length of 199.9 meters, a gross tonnage of 68,252 tons, and a displacement of 39,069 tons. Constructed by Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI), the vessel is a testament to China’s leadership in maritime innovation.

Equipped with cutting-edge solar technology from LONGi, the vessel’s PV system can generate 410,000 kWh of electricity per year, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The integration of LNG as a clean fuel further enhances the ship’s environmental performance, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Pioneering Sustainability in Shipping

COSCO Shipping, the company behind the Yuan Hai Kou, has demonstrated its commitment to building a green fleet by investing in LNG-powered vessels. The company’s focus on sustainability aligns with evolving environmental regulations in the maritime industry, setting a new standard for responsible shipping practices.

With the successful launch of the Yuan Hai Kou, COSCO Shipping reaffirms its position as a leader in sustainable shipping solutions. The vessel’s innovative design and eco-friendly features herald a brighter future for the maritime sector, where environmental stewardship and efficiency go hand in hand.
