Revolutionizing Offshore Solar: GCL System Integration’s New Floating PV Module

China-based GCL System Integration (GCLSI), a subsidiary of the GCL Group, has introduced a groundbreaking new floating photovoltaic (PV) module specifically designed for offshore solar applications. Developed in collaboration with Norwegian company Ocean Sun, the NT10/60GT module represents a significant advancement in marine solar technology.

The NT10/60GT module boasts a robust design capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of marine environments, including high humidity, corrosion, and wave impact. It features GCL’s proprietary IP68-rated junction box with four-layer waterproof protection, strategically positioned on the sun-facing side. This innovative design includes a diaphragm that facilitates heat dissipation while isolating the junction box from seawater, ensuring optimal performance and longevity.

Exceeding IEC standards, particularly in potential induced degradation (PID) resistance, the module holds certification from TÜV Rheinland for marine PV system use, underscoring its reliability and quality.

The NT10/60GT module is integrated into Ocean Sun’s floating platform, which utilizes a flexible membrane and prefabricated rail system. This configuration enhances heat dissipation through direct seawater contact, improving energy conversion efficiency by over 10% compared to traditional setups.

With an electrical output ranging from 460 W to 490 W under standard test conditions and a peak efficiency of 21.78%, the module supports a system voltage of up to 1,500 V and utilizes MC4 connectors for seamless connectivity. Additionally, its dual-glass structure, anodized aluminum alloy frame, and high wind and snow load ratings ensure durability and performance in challenging offshore environments.

In a recent project collaboration, GCLSI supplied solar modules for Ocean Sun’s floating solar installation in Albania, set to expand to 2 MWp by the year’s end. This initiative underscores the growing adoption of innovative solar solutions in maritime settings.

Looking ahead, GCLSI’s partnership with Ocean Sun aims to accelerate the deployment of floating solar technology globally. In a strategic move with Singapore-based Canopy Power, the companies are set to introduce floating solar solutions in Australia, addressing renewable energy needs while mitigating land and water scarcity challenges.
