Chinese Sand Carrier Capsizes Off Philippines Coast, Leaving 2 Dead & 9 Missing

A tragic incident unfolded off the coast of Barangay Malawaan in Rizal, Occidental Mindoro, on April 16, 2025, when the Chinese-operated sand carrier, MV Hong Hai 16, capsized. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed that two crew members lost their lives, while nine others remain missing.

The vessel, operated by Keen Peak Corp, overturned around 5:20 am amidst moderate sea conditions. It was discovered upside down and partially submerged in shallow waters. The cause of the sudden capsizing is currently under investigation.

Of the 25 individuals on board, which included 13 Filipinos and 12 Chinese nationals, fourteen have been rescued so far—six Filipinos and eight Chinese. Tragically, one Filipino and one Chinese crew member have been reported as fatalities.

The search and rescue operation continues for the remaining nine missing crew members—six Filipinos and three Chinese. The PCG Special Operations Group in Southern Tagalog has deployed divers equipped with cutting tools to access parts of the capsized vessel, focusing on the engine room in hopes of finding survivors.

Precautions are being taken for potential oil spills from the vessel, with oil spill containment booms on standby. PCG personnel are vigilant, monitoring the site and conducting underwater assessments in preparation for ongoing diving operations.

PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan led an aerial and site inspection of the incident area, urging response units to intensify their efforts to locate and rescue the missing crew members. Immediate actions were taken upon receiving the alert, including diving preparations and plans to create openings in the vessel for rescue and recovery.

This incident echoes a previous one involving a Chinese dredging vessel that capsized in Manila Bay in May 2023. Authorities are working diligently to prevent further loss of life and uphold maritime safety standards.

As of April 17, 2025, search and rescue operations are ongoing, with the PCG committed to addressing the situation. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
