The Nao Santa Maria Replica Opens to Public in London

A replica of Christopher Columbus’s flagship Nao Santa Maria has opened to the public at London’s St. Katharine Docks Marina, offering visitors a glimpse into the historic voyage that changed the course of history.

The original Nao Santa Maria was one of the three ships used by Columbus’s crew in 1492 when they discovered territories in the Caribbean and the Americas. The 93 feet replica faithfully carries the Spanish flag, symbolizing the sponsorship of the voyage by the Spanish monarchs. A smaller Union Jack also adorns the mast, marking the replica’s British pitstop.

Constructed under the Nao Victoria Foundation, the non-profit organization behind the replica, the Nao Santa Maria stays true to the original blueprint. The ship is built using a mix of materials, with oak wood forming most of the body. The hull is made of fibreglass covered in oak wood, while the masts are constructed from steel.

“We have five decks and five masts with sails, and nowadays we are 14 people sailing mostly. But in the past, it would be around 45 to 50 people,” project manager Desireé Gonzales explains.

In addition to the main body, the replica features period-accurate additions such as cannons, journals, lanterns, and rudders in the lower decks. The captain’s quarters even house a skeleton, representing the original captain of the Nao Santa Maria.

Gonzales and her Spanish crewmates embarked on a journey from Andalusia in southern Spain to reach London, where the ship will be open for visitors until June 8. The replica offers a unique opportunity to experience a piece of maritime history and learn about the challenges and triumphs of early explorers.
