CLI Signs Contract with Royal Bodewes for Eco-Friendly Cargo Vessel

Germany-based logistics company CLI has announced a new partnership with Dutch shipbuilder Royal Bodewes for the construction of a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly multipurpose cargo vessel. The agreement was finalized recently, marking a significant step towards sustainable maritime transport.

The construction of the eco-friendly ship, known as RB 8500, is scheduled to commence in October 2025 at the Royal Bodewes shipyard in Hoogezand, the Netherlands. With an anticipated delivery date in the summer of 2026, the vessel is expected to revolutionize the logistics operations between Canada, the Netherlands, and the UK.

Key Features of RB 8500

The RB 8500 is designed to meet the specific logistic demands of CLI and will boast a cargo capacity of nearly 8,500 deadweight tons. Equipped with advanced environmental and fuel efficiency technologies, the vessel aims to set new standards in sustainable maritime transportation across the transatlantic route.

One of the standout features of the RB 8500 is its readiness for methanol fuel, enabled by a cutting-edge MAN main engine. This commitment to eco-friendly innovation underscores CLI’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions in the shipping industry.

Additionally, the vessel will be outfitted with an Eco Flettner rotor sail, a feature that directly reduces CO2 emissions while maintaining high speeds during operations. The inclusion of two Liebherr cranes, each capable of lifting 80 tons, further enhances the vessel’s capacity for heavy-duty cargo operations.

Environmental Impact and Service Enhancements

The RB 8500 is poised to increase operational efficiency and capacity, enabling at least one additional voyage per year on the transatlantic route compared to existing vessels. This not only benefits the environment by reducing emissions but also enhances service reliability for customers.

In a related development, Royal Bodewes recently celebrated the keel laying ceremony for a biofuel-powered cargo ship ordered by the Finnish Meriaura Group. These vessels, powered by a combination of biofuel and diesel, are scheduled for delivery in early 2026, further demonstrating Royal Bodewes’ commitment to sustainable shipping practices.
