CMA CGM Receives Final 5,500 TEU Container Vessel from Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding

The Marseille-headquartered shipping giant, CMA CGM, recently took delivery of the last unit in a series of ten 5,500 TEU container vessels from Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, a part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

The new vessel, named CMA CGM Tiga, was handed over in early April this year and is said to represent a ‘new generation’ of eco-friendly medium-sized containerships. With a length of 255.5 meters, a width of 40 meters, and a deadweight tonnage of 73,025.91 tons, the boxship is equipped with advanced sustainability-oriented technological solutions.

Powered by the WinGD7X82-2.0 main engine, the CMA CGM Tiga features selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and alternate maritime power (AMP) systems to reduce sulfur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, in line with IMO’s decarbonization target for 2050.

The vessel, along with the entire series, exceeds the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) baseline by 53.6%, surpassing the IMO Phase III standards for environmental performance.

CMA CGM placed the order for the 5,500 TEU container vessels in 2021, with a total of 22 containerships worth approximately $2.3 billion. The company also ordered twelve dual-fuel LNG-powered containerships, further expanding its fleet.

The first vessel in the series, CMA CGM Sahara, was delivered in February 2024, followed by subsequent deliveries throughout the year. In March 2025, CMA CGM placed a new order for twelve dual-fuel LNG containerships with Jiangnan Shipyard, continuing its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the shipping industry.

With the delivery of the CMA CGM Tiga, CMA CGM strengthens its position as a leader in eco-friendly shipping practices and continues to invest in cutting-edge technologies to reduce its environmental footprint.
