The U.S. Coast Guard Conducts Multi-Agency Operation at San Juan Cargo Terminal

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan, in collaboration with several federal partner agencies, recently carried out a comprehensive Multi-Agency Strike Force Operation (MASFO) at a cargo container terminal in the Bay of San Juan.

During the operation, authorities inspected a total of 105 containers and 40 vehicles, and conducted 30 Transportation Worker Identification Credential verifications. While no security violations were found, three containers were temporarily detained due to preexisting damage and improper cargo securing.

Lt. Cmdr. Carlos Ortega-Pérez, Chief of the Coast Guard Sector San Juan waterways management division, highlighted the strategic importance of the operation: “This MASFO is part of the Coast Guard’s efforts to ensure the safety and security of containerized cargo shipments within our marine transportation system, essential for the safe flow of commerce in the region.”

The operation showcased a strong interagency collaboration, involving key federal agencies such as Coast Guard Investigative Services, Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ATF, DEA, U.S. Marshall’s Service, and others.

Capt. Luis J. Rodríguez, commander of Coast Guard Sector San Juan, emphasized the significance of a collaborative approach to port security: “Port security is a top priority that necessitates a whole-of-government effort to achieve the highest standards.”

The primary objectives of the MASFO were to enhance regulatory inspection activities and reinforce cargo safety and security to prevent the transportation of materials linked to illicit activities or terrorist organizations.

This operation follows recent container security initiatives at major U.S. ports, including the Port of New York and New Jersey, where inspections revealed a significant deficiency rate in hazardous material compliance.

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan team, comprising Marine Science Technicians and Maritime Enforcement Specialists, remains dedicated to ensuring regional maritime security and operational integrity.
