U.S. LNG Exports to Europe Surge Amidst Global Energy Crisis

Europe soaked up most U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports for the second straight month in February, as cold weather and strong prices pushed up demand for the superchilled gas across the Atlantic, according to preliminary data from financial firm LSEG.

The U.S. is the world’s largest exporter of LNG and continues to play a major role in supplying Europe since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine significantly reduced the amount of Russian gas piped to Europe.

In February, the U.S. exported 8.35 million metric tonnes (MT) of LNG, with 82% of it going to Europe. The Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF) benchmark in Europe averaged $15.28 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) in February, reflecting the high demand and prices in the region.

The U.S. also increased its LNG exports to Latin America, with 560,000 tonnes heading to the region. Egypt and Jordan bought two cargoes each from the U.S. in February, signaling a diversification of export destinations.

The first two months of 2025 have seen U.S. LNG production at high levels, with the partial startup of Venture Global Inc’s Plaquemines LNG export plant in Louisiana contributing to the record exports. Plaquemines hit a record high of 1.8 billion cubic feet of gas per day in February, highlighting the plant’s significant role in meeting global energy demands.

The surge in U.S. LNG exports to Europe comes amidst a global energy crisis, with concerns about energy security and supply disruptions. The shift towards LNG as a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels has further boosted demand for U.S. exports, positioning the country as a key player in the global energy market.

Overall, the data reflects the pivotal role of U.S. LNG exports in addressing the energy needs of Europe and other regions, while also underscoring the challenges and opportunities presented by the evolving energy landscape.

As the world grapples with the complex dynamics of energy supply and demand, the U.S. remains a crucial player in the global energy mix, with its LNG exports playing a vital role in ensuring energy security and stability in key regions around the world.
