Guangzhou Shipyard International Begins Construction of LNG Dual-Fuel Car Carrier for HMM

Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has initiated the construction of the first LNG dual-fuel car carrier for Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), a leading South Korean shipping company.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the 10,800 CEU car carrier, developed in partnership with Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute, took place on February 12, marking the beginning of this innovative project.

This cutting-edge vessel will feature LNG dual-fuel propulsion and will be capable of utilizing ammonia and methanol as alternative fuels. Additionally, the ship will be equipped with integrated exhaust gas recirculation technology (EGR) to comply with the International Maritime Organization’s Tier III emission standards.

HMM’s order for up to ten 10,800 CEU LNG dual-fuel car carriers at GSI underscores the shipping company’s commitment to sustainable maritime practices. This order was secured following a long-term charter agreement with Hyundai Glovis, a prominent South Korean logistics firm.

With nearly 40 orders for car carriers received and 13 successfully delivered to date, GSI has established itself as a key player in the shipbuilding industry. The recent contract from Hyundai Glovis for six 10,800 CEU LNG dual-fuel pure car and truck carriers further solidifies GSI’s position as a preferred choice for state-of-the-art vessels.

Chinese shipyards like GSI continue to dominate the global market for new car carrier orders, highlighting their expertise and capabilities in delivering advanced maritime solutions.
