Poland’s Gaz-System Selects Contractor for FSRU Offshore Section
Poland’s gas transmission system operator, Gaz-System, has taken a significant step forward in the development of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the Gulf of Gdańsk. The company has announced the selection of the general contractor for the offshore section of the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) project.
An agreement has been signed with a consortium comprising Gap İnşaat Anasayfa, Unitek İnşaat San, and Fabe Polska to oversee the construction of the marine part of the FSRU program. This includes preparing the executive design, supplying machinery and equipment, obtaining necessary permits, and constructing the berthing and mooring quay, as well as the submarine gas pipeline connecting the terminal to Poland’s transmission system.
Gaz-System’s President of the Management Board, Sławomir Hinc, highlighted the importance of the FSRU terminal, stating that it will significantly increase the security of gas supply for Poland and the Central and Eastern European region.
The FSRU project has already received the building permit for the offshore portion, with construction set to begin in the second half of 2025. The onshore part, involving the construction of gas pipelines, is also underway in three sections: Kolnik–Gdańsk, Gardeja–Kolnik, and Gustorzyn–Gardeja.
The FSRU itself will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea and operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) under a long-term time charter party agreement. Once completed, the FSRU will have a capacity of 6.1 billion cubic meters per year.
This new FSRU terminal will complement Poland’s existing LNG terminal, the President Lech Kaczyński facility in Świnoujście. With the capacity recently expanded to 8.3 billion cubic meters, Poland is solidifying its position as a key player in the European gas market.
