Corio Generation Submits Planning Application for Sceirde Rocks Wind Farm

Offshore wind developer Corio Generation has recently submitted a planning application for the ambitious 450MW Sceirde Rocks wind farm off the western coast of Ireland. This proposed development aims to harness the power of renewable energy to contribute to Ireland’s goal of sourcing 80% of its electricity from sustainable sources by 2030.

Project Details

The application seeks approval for the installation of 30 turbines, each with a maximum tip height of up to 325m. These turbines will be strategically located between 5 km and 12 km from the nearest mainland point. If the consent is granted, construction is scheduled to commence in 2026, with the first electricity generation anticipated by 2030.

The comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment Report and Natura Impact Statement accompanying the application outline the potential effects of the project on the natural environment and propose suitable mitigations.

Community Benefits

In addition to powering approximately 350,000 homes with clean energy, the Sceirde Rocks Wind Farm is projected to inject around €3.5 million annually into the local community for a period of 20 years, totaling an impressive €70 million in expected investment from the construction phase onwards.

Future Prospects

As the first offshore wind farm on the Irish west coast, Sceirde Rocks holds the promise of establishing Connemara as a pivotal offshore wind hub for the region, complementing the existing wind farms on the east coast. The project is being developed by Fuinneamh Sceirde Teoranta, a joint venture between Corio Generation, Macquarie Asset Management, and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.

With its potential to significantly impact Ireland’s renewable energy landscape and the local economy, the Sceirde Rocks Wind Farm represents a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the nation.
