Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding to Construct Four Methanol and Ammonia-Ready Bulk Carriers for COSCO Shipping

Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has secured a contract with COSCO Shipping to build four state-of-the-art methanol and ammonia-ready bulk carriers. The deal, finalized on July 29, will see the construction of four 210,000-ton vessels that will be chartered by COSCO Shipping Bulk.

These bulk carriers will come equipped with comprehensive upgrades in technical performance, featuring a next-generation linear design that will reduce fuel consumption by approximately 6% compared to their predecessors. Notably, the vessels will meet EEDI Stage III energy efficiency requirements, showcasing their commitment to sustainability.

One of the key highlights of these newbuilds is their dual-fuel capacity design, enabling them to operate on both methanol and ammonia. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the vessels are future-proofed for the deployment of alternative fuels, aligning with the industry’s push towards decarbonization.

Prior to this contract, Beihai Shipbuilding and COSCO Shipping Bulk had already inked a deal for the construction of two ammonia and methanol-ready bulk carriers with a capacity of 209,800 dwt each, set for delivery in 2027.

With an eye towards sustainability and innovation, COSCO Shipping Bulk has further expanded its fleet by ordering an additional 3+5 210,000-ton methanol and ammonia-ready bulk carriers, valued at $93 million each. These Newcastle-type vessels will boast a length of about 300 meters and a width of 50 meters, incorporating energy-saving features such as front guide wheels, vortex-eliminating fins, and shaft generators.

By investing in these cutting-edge vessels, COSCO Shipping Bulk is setting a new standard for eco-friendly shipping practices, paving the way for a more sustainable maritime industry.
