The Owner of M/V DALI Files Lawsuit Against Hyundai Heavy Industries Over Bridge Collision

The owner of the container ship M/V DALI has taken legal action against Hyundai Heavy Industries, claiming that defects in the vessel’s switchboard system were responsible for its collision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine PTE Ltd filed the lawsuit on July 31st in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, represented by maritime law firms Blank Rome and Duane Morris.

The complaint alleges that Hyundai Heavy Industries’ faulty switchboard design led to insecure wiring connections that could lose connection during normal operation. These defects reportedly caused two power outages while the ship was departing the Port of Baltimore, ultimately resulting in the collision with the bridge.

The plaintiffs are seeking damages for vessel repairs and indemnification for third-party claims, following a previous settlement of $102 million with the United States government for disaster response costs.

Background of the Incident

The March 26 collision between M/V DALI and the Francis Scott Key Bridge claimed the lives of six individuals and caused significant disruptions to shipping operations at the Port of Baltimore. Federal agencies undertook extensive recovery efforts, clearing approximately 50,000 tons of debris from the Fort McHenry Channel to reopen it for commercial navigation by June 10, 2024.

The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation into the incident, revealing that the vessel experienced two electrical blackouts during its approach to the bridge. The first blackout occurred due to the unexpected tripping of breakers HR1 and LR1 after the ship’s departure.

Legal Proceedings and Oversight

The case is currently before Judge Kai N Scott, with the plaintiffs seeking accountability for the damages incurred as a result of the collision. The outcome of the lawsuit will shed further light on the responsibilities of shipbuilders in ensuring the safety and integrity of maritime vessels.
