DEME Secures Contracts for Nordlicht 1 and 2 Offshore Wind Farms

DEME, a leader in offshore energy solutions, has recently announced securing two contracts worth a combined $312 million for the transport and installation of 112 foundations at the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farms in Germany. Additionally, DEME will provide scour protection for these projects, marking a significant milestone in the renewable energy sector.

The scope of work includes installing 68 foundations and scour protection at Nordlicht 1 in 2026, followed by 44 foundations and scour protection at Nordlicht 2 in the subsequent year. To achieve this, DEME will deploy several vessels, including its offshore installation vessel Orion, a jack-up vessel, and a fallpipe vessel specifically for scour protection.

The Nordlicht wind farm zone, situated 85 km north of Borkum in the German North Sea, consists of two sites – Nordlicht 1 with a capacity of 980 MW and Nordlicht 2 with a capacity of 630 MW. Vattenfall, in collaboration with BASF as a key partner owning 49% of the projects, is responsible for developing and constructing the Nordlicht cluster.

Once operational, the Nordlicht wind farm zone is projected to provide clean energy to 1.7 million households and support German industries in their sustainability efforts. While the final investment decision is pending, a signing ceremony was held by Vattenfall to officially allocate the various scope components to the contractors involved.

Construction activities for Nordlicht 1 and 2 are scheduled to commence in 2026, with the wind farms expected to be fully operational by 2028. Bas Nekeman, Business Unit Director North Europe at DEME, expressed pride in being entrusted with this flagship project, emphasizing the alignment of Vattenfall and BASF’s commitment to sustainable energy transition with DEME’s innovative solutions for the evolving energy landscape.
