DEME Wins Contracts for Nordlicht 1 and 2 Offshore Wind Farms
Belgium-based marine contractor DEME has secured two contracts for the transport and installation of 112 foundations at the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farms in Germany. These contracts, valued at around €300m ($312m) in total, also include the provision of scour protection at both sites.
The Nordlicht wind farm zone, located 85 km north of Borkum in the German North Sea, consists of Nordlicht 1 with a capacity of 980MW and Nordlicht 2 with a capacity of 630MW. Developed primarily by Vattenfall with BASF as a key partner holding 49% ownership, the wind farm zone is expected to supply clean energy to 1.7 million households and German industries.
While the final investment decision is pending, Vattenfall recently conducted a signing ceremony to allocate the various scope components to the contractors involved. Construction of the wind farms is slated to commence in 2026, with full operational capacity expected by 2028. DEME will handle the installation of 68 foundations and scour protection at Nordlicht 1 in 2026, followed by 44 foundations and scour protection at Nordlicht 2 the following year.
To execute the projects, DEME will utilize several vessels including its offshore installation vessel Orion, a jackup vessel, and a fallpipe vessel for scour protection.
