DNV Grants Approval in Principle for Second-Generation LR2 Tanker Design with Innovative Cargo Pumping System

DNV has recently awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Hyundai Mipo for their groundbreaking new second-generation LR2 tanker design. This innovative design incorporates a hydraulically driven cargo pumping system from Framo, offering a host of benefits that promise to revolutionize the tanker industry.

One of the key highlights of this new design is the elimination of the traditional pump room. By removing this space, the vessel gains increased cargo capacity while simultaneously enhancing safety by eliminating a hazardous area. This design choice prioritizes the safety of both the crew and the vessel, setting a new standard for safety in tanker operations.

In addition to the removal of the pump room, the new LR2 tanker design boasts a simplified cargo piping system. All valves and pipes are located on deck, streamlining cargo operations and minimizing the risk of contamination between segregations. Each tank is equipped with a submerged pump, ensuring complete cargo segregation and further reducing the risk of contamination during transport.

Moreover, the vessel features deck-mounted cargo heaters, eliminating the need for in-tank heating coils. This design choice not only reduces slop generation but also facilitates quicker and more effective tank cleaning, ultimately improving operational efficiency and reducing downtime.

Dongjin Lee, EVP/Head of the Initial Design Div. & Detailed Design Div. at HD Hyundai Mipo, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This achievement reflects our commitment to delivering next-generation solutions that meet operational and environmental expectations. Through our collaboration with DNV and Framo, we have developed a design that enhances safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.”

Lee further highlighted the environmental benefits of the new design, noting that depending on the operational profile, the LR2 tanker could potentially reduce fuel consumption by up to 800 MT annually. This reduction in fuel consumption directly translates to lower emissions and improved sustainability for customers, aligning with industry-wide efforts to minimize environmental impact.

Overall, the second-generation LR2 tanker design from HD Hyundai Mipo represents a significant advancement in tanker technology. With a focus on safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability, this innovative design sets a new standard for the industry and paves the way for a more sustainable future in maritime transportation.
