Offshore services provider DOF has unveiled a groundbreaking investment in a modular cable repair spread aimed at streamlining offshore wind operators’ response to cable faults.

Designed for seamless integration across DOF’s extensive fleet of 65 vessels, the innovative system offers a unique blend of fleet-wide adaptability, road transportability, and rapid deployment capabilities.

Developed in partnership with engineering experts at Royal IHC, the modular spread enables mobilization and commissioning within a remarkable 48-hour timeframe, requiring just 12 lifting operations.

According to DOF, this marks a significant advancement over conventional fixed systems, which typically suffer from limited single-vessel availability.

DOF Atlantic’s Executive Vice President, Dag Raymond Rasch, commented, “This represents a true paradigm shift in how the industry can address cable fault downtime. Our investment underscores DOF’s ability to swiftly meet clients’ requirements. This system isn’t simply repurposed oil and gas equipment – it has been purpose-built for offshore wind, prioritizing flexibility, efficiency, and uptime.”

The newly introduced system comprises a compact quadrant handler, tensioner, roller tables, and an over-boarding chute – all meticulously crafted for plug-and-play operation. Its compact footprint not only enhances deck efficiency but also ensures cable integrity throughout all lay and recovery modes.

This strategic investment follows the successful execution of a prominent subsea cable repair project for a major operator in the Netherlands during 2024. DOF leveraged its owned vessels and existing repair spread to swiftly restore service with minimal disruption.

Rasch further added, “By owning both the vessels and the modular repair spread, DOF is uniquely positioned to provide clients with a level of control and responsiveness that is typically challenging to achieve. This translates to improved response times and reduced downtime for clients, particularly in emergency scenarios.”

DOF has already secured multiple frame agreements with leading offshore wind operators across Europe, the USA, and APAC, underscoring the global significance of its cable repair service line.
