Subsea Global Solutions Executes Complex In-Water Thruster Installation and Rudder Bushing Replacement
Subsea Global Solutions recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing a challenging in-water thruster installation and rudder bushing replacement project. This accomplishment not only eliminated the need for drydocking but also ensured that the vessel remained on schedule.
The project, which was originally planned for drydock, had to be expedited for in-water repairs due to the unavailability of drydocking facilities that aligned with the vessel’s operational requirements. Subsea Global Solutions was chosen for the task based on its extensive expertise in in-water technical repairs and its proven track record of successful projects for the client.
The operation took place in Portland, Oregon, with support from various Subsea Global Solutions locations, including Long Beach, Port Angeles, Miami, and Houston. To meet the project’s demands, round-the-clock shifts were necessary, with multiple teams working simultaneously on tasks such as cofferdam fabrication, thruster installation, and rudder bushing replacement.
A crucial aspect of the repair involved the engineering and on-site fabrication of a custom reusable cofferdam. This cofferdam was designed to create a dry environment for the rudder bushing replacement, encapsulating the 43.5-metric-ton rudder with precision and control. Weighing over 51 metric tons and generating 300 metric tons of buoyant force, this cofferdam is among the largest of its kind.
Despite facing challenging weather conditions, in-water currents, and limited visibility, Subsea Global Solutions’ expert dive teams executed the repairs with exceptional precision. This ensured that the vessel could be back in service without any delays, showcasing the team’s dedication to excellence and professionalism.
