Eco Wave Power Partners with MOQ Engineering for Porto Wave Energy Project
Eco Wave Power, a leading wave energy developer, is making significant strides in its Porto wave energy project with the appointment of Portuguese firm MOQ Engineering for the final design work and load calculations. This partnership brings the project closer to its anticipated launch in 2026.
The Porto wave energy project is part of a 20 MW concession agreement with Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo (APDL), aimed at integrating Eco Wave Power’s innovative onshore wave energy technology. The project aligns with Portugal’s goal to achieve 85% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
MOQ Engineering’s role includes developing final civil engineering designs and detailed load calculations for the floaters, essential components in Eco Wave Power’s wave energy system. These steps are crucial for the safe and efficient installation of the floaters at the Porto site, with completion of the design phase expected by February 2025.
Upon finalizing the design scope, Eco Wave Power plans to submit the complete execution project, including engineering specifications, to APDL for approval. Approval will signal the start of the next phase: production of the floaters and associated structural elements.

The MW-scale project aims to validate large-scale wave energy generation viability, reduce carbon emissions, create jobs, and foster innovation in Portugal’s renewable energy sector. Eco Wave Power is also advancing other wave energy projects in Taiwan and the Port of Los Angeles, with plans for additional international initiatives in the pipeline.

In addition to energy production, the project includes an underwater wave energy museum and education center known as “The Gallery,” located beneath the breakwater where the energy conversion units will be installed.
In August 2024, Eco Wave Power launched its inaugural MW-scale wave energy project in Porto, Portugal, with a site visit by the company’s CEO and engineering team alongside APDL and other stakeholders to kick off the project.
Notably, Eco Wave Power established the wholly owned subsidiary EW Portugal – Wave Energy Solutions in Portugal in September 2020 to initiate formal licensing procedures for the 20 MW wave energy project.
