Eco Wave Power Advances Wave Energy Station Development in Porto, Portugal

Wave energy developer Eco Wave Power has taken a significant step forward in the development of its 1 MW wave energy station in Porto, Portugal, by paying 50% of the grid connection fee to E-REDES, the Portuguese electricity distribution system operator.

The company has also officially accepted the Connection Conditions for the power plant, as outlined in a letter from E-REDES dated November 27, 2024. This marks a crucial milestone in the project’s progression.

Progress and Plans

Eco Wave Power has proposed a tentative grid connection date for 2026, pending final permitting, construction, and regulatory procedures. The project is part of a larger 20 MW concession agreement with the port authority APDL, with the final TURH permit issued in March 2024.

Physical works on the project have commenced, with infrastructure upgrades at the underground tunnel site, known as “The Gallery,” where the wave conversion unit will be located. This site will also serve as an underwater wave energy museum and public education center.

Infrastructure upgrades at the tunnel began in February 2025, including sand and debris removal, waterproofing, and structural reinforcements. Juan José Gómez has been appointed as the Power Station Manager to oversee the project, with Portugal-based MOQ Engineering handling the final design and load assessments.

Founder’s Perspective

“Portugal is not only a global leader in renewable energy—it is now leading the way in wave energy commercialization,” said Inna Braverman, Founder and CEO of Eco Wave Power. “By securing grid connection for our first 1MW station, we are turning vision into reality. Together with our incredible partners in Portugal, we are building a new era of clean, predictable power sourced directly from the ocean.”

Expansion and Future Initiatives

In January, Eco Wave Power hired Portuguese firm MOQ Engineering for the final design work and load calculations for the Porto wave energy project, bringing it closer to its scheduled launch in 2026. The company is also progressing on other wave energy ventures, including projects in Taiwan and the Port of Los Angeles.

As Eco Wave Power seeks to expand its presence in the wave energy market, it anticipates unveiling additional international initiatives in the near future. The establishment of EW Portugal -Wave Energy Solutions in 2020 marked the company’s commitment to advancing wave energy solutions in Portugal.
